Right after the glorious Macworld Keynote in January of this year, I wrote an article about my desire for a cheaper, simpler iPhone. The rumor mill is grinding and it sounds like my dreams are going to come true (hopefully). I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring to offer up my predictions for what the device will have.
Here are my thoughts:
- Considering that manufacturing has already begun so soon after the iPhone, I will make the assumption that the form will be largely the same. It would make sense for them to make it a bit smaller so that it's distinguishable physically from the iPhone.
- I'm betting (as are many other speculators) that the device will be a phone and an iPod. The functionality for those two parts of the phone will be identical to the iPhone.
- All the other features and apps will be present that don't require a data plan.
Here's my visual take on what it'll be as well as my price predictions:

Some speculators claim it will be available as soon as September so it's here in full-force for the holidays. I'm anxious to see what it turns out to be.

They might also be able to take out the camera to eliminate some of the cost. It's not that I think camera's on phones are junky… but they sure don't compare to most digital cameras, especially when there are some wonderful DSLR's out there. Also… I think it would shrink the receiver space for the ear and expand the screen a bit… trying to maximize the surface area and aim for the wide-screen formatting still. Here's to hoping.
Why throw a perfectly good predicting hat into a ring to be trampled on by clowns? Looks like you might have an easier time convincing the wifey and get one for Decemberween (if you start behavin'). But, the question is, now that you've tasted of your boss's iPhone, would you mind living with out a few bells and whistles and turbo charged heat-seeking ion rockets?
I'd like to see it come with a built in TV remote control and a garage door opener...you don't know how many lives that would simplify.
I don't know Clifton. The "rumor mill" you cite claims this new phone "will be similar in function, ...but with a different outer design." I see them eliminating the touch screen and reverting to the already established ipod scroll wheel before I see a "nano" version lacking mail and web browsing.
If they do create a nano, it's going to have to be smaller than your prediction :)
That would be cool, if you are right, which you sound quite confident that you are. Then that might put me closer to actually being able to offord one.
So you're saying that for the same price as a today's 8GB Nano, Apple will sell a 4GB iPhone that will cannibalize their $500/$600 product?
Sorry for the delay in getting your comments posted. I had to sift through a myriad of junk comments.
Kaleb, I know that many indicators point to a click-wheel phone that is dumbed down considerably from the iPhone, but I'd be really surprised if Apple did that. First of all, I can't imagine ever dialing a phone number with a click wheel, let alone writing a text message. That would be a nightmare! It would seem that if Apple wants to keep their phone models up out of the "just like everybody else" category that they'd stay with the touch screen option. Anything less seems like it would just be following suit with the hundreds of ho-hum phones that already exist.
If they basically take an iPod and put a phone on it with nothing more to it, I'll be sorely disappointed. But with indicators that the next generation of iPod will be touch screen, I don't see why they'd retrograde the iPhone Nano to use the old technology.
I guess we'll find out next month (or hopefully sooner).
More about possible iPhone Nanos from The Washington Post.
I guess we'll find out on Wednesday, September 5th.
